ONE ON ONE INTERVIEW with Dr. David J. Pincus
TOP INDUSTRY EXPERTS: What inspired you to pursue a career in surgery, and how did you choose to specialize in plastic surgery?
DR.DAVID PINCUS: I became passionate about surgery as a teenager, but plastic and reconstructive surgery truly captivated me. The blend of artistry and medical precision in this field allows me to make a major impact on patients' lives, enhancing both form and function. I love the diversity of the cases I perform and my patients too. This unique combination drew me to specialize in plastic surgery, where I can empower individuals to improve not only their aesthetic goals, but also their quality of life. After earning my medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine, I then completed my general surgery residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. From there, I pursued specialized training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. With over 20 years of experience, I have dedicated my career to providing personalized care and achieving natural-looking results for my patients. It’s safe to say I made the right decision.
TIE: What challenges do you encounter when performing breast revision surgeries, and how do you address them?
DP: Each breast revision surgery presents unique challenges, and it's crucial to understand the patient's goals and concerns. Common issues include capsular contracture, implant malposition, and changes in breast tissue over time. For instance, capsular contracture involves the tightening of scar tissue around the implant, leading to discomfort and distortion. Implant malposition can result in asymmetry or an unnatural appearance. Addressing these requires a tailored surgical approach to correct the specific problem and achieve the desired outcome. Open communication during consultations is essential to align expectations and develop a personalized plan that restores confidence and comfort. Understanding who the patient was before their initial surgery and who they are now is vital. This insight helps me tailor the revision to not only correct physical issues but also to resonate with their personal identity and aesthetic goals. It's about truly listening and connecting with the individual to ensure the results align with their expectations and enhance their quality of life.
TIE: What does it mean to you to be featured on the cover of Top Industry Experts magazine?
DP: Being featured on the cover of Top Industry Experts magazine is a tremendous honor. It's exciting to be recognized alongside leaders who have had a significant impact in their field. This feature not only highlights the dedication of my team at Pincus Plastic Surgery, but also our commitment to advancing the beauty industry. I'm thrilled to share our work on a national platform and contribute to the ongoing evolution of Pincus Plastic Surgery.
TIE: As one of the Top 100 experts in the medical field, how do you leverage your influence to shape
the future of cosmetic surgery?
DP: As a plastic surgeon, I'm honored to be recognized among the top experts in the medical field.
This acknowledgment fuels my commitment to advancing cosmetic surgery. At Pincus Plastic Surgery, we integrate cutting-edge technologies and techniques to enhance patient outcomes. By sharing our experiences and collaborating with peers, we contribute to the evolution of best practices in cosmetic surgery. Our goal is to empower patients, increasing their confidence and well-being.
TIE: Can you discuss a particularly memorable case that highlights the artistry and precision required in your field?
DP: One of my most memorable cases was a patient who came to me after experiencing complications from a previous surgery with another surgeon. During her recovery with the other doctor, she developed an ulceration that progressed into a left breast implant exposure—where the implant became literally visible through a hole in the breast tissue. The implant was removed without replacement, leaving her with physical deformities, a lack of confidence, and feelings of pure embarrassment. When she came to me, she was desperate for a solution. She had visible asymmetry, not only from lack of implant in the left breast but also a capsular contracture of the right breast. I recommended new implants with GalaFLEX, known as the "internal bra," to provide added strength and structure. I also performed a breast capsulorrhaphy, along with a breast lift, repositioning her breasts to a more natural and youthful position, and revised her scars to improve both their appearance and function. This case truly exemplifies what I love about my work. I was able to take a situation that seemed hopeless—a case of severe ulceration and exposure that left her feeling ashamed—and fully restore her breasts. By revising, lifting, and replacing her implants, I helped her regain her confidence and feel proud of her body again. It’s a case I’ll never forget, one all about recovery, renewal, and transformation.
TIE: How do you manage patient expectations, especially those undergoing revision surgeries?
DP: You know, that's a great question. The truth is, every patient is different, and during the first consultation, we begin building that essential trust. Many patients come in feeling upset or even defeated about their previous surgeries from other practices. This is my opportunity to correct those issues and achieve the results they originally desired. A significant portion of my practice involves revision cases, so managing expectations is crucial. This process starts with my staff and extends throughout the entire practice. Ensuring that every patient is aligned with us can be challenging, but it's a top priority.
TIE: What innovations or trends in cosmetic surgery are you most excited about?
DP: I'm excited about integrating minimally invasive technologies like BodyTite turbo skin tightening into cosmetic surgery. Combining surgical procedures with non-surgical treatments such as BBL, Moxi, and Halo lasers allows us to address multiple areas simultaneously. This approach enhances results and streamlines recovery, enabling patients to heal from both surgery and laser treatments concurrently. This is less a trend and more a way to emphasize collaboration in the operating room maximizing results.
TIE: How do you see your practice contributing to the broader conversation about body positivity and self-confidence?
DP: Plastic Surgery is not about societal standards—it’s about helping individuals feel confident and empowered in their own skin. My goal is to support patients in making choices that align with their personal vision of happiness and self-confidence. Whether it’s addressing something that’s been holding them back or helping them embrace a refreshed version of themselves, my practice focuses on empowering people through physical change, allowing them to feel their best both inside and out. That’s what is important.
TIE: Outside of surgery, how do you balance your personal life?
DP: It’s all about finding the right balance. When I’m not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my three boys—they’re my motivation and my way to unwind. I believe a balanced life is a successful life.
I see life as a triangle: your three biggest priorities need to balance each other out. Sometimes, one side of the triangle may have to bear more weight, while at other times, the focus shifts to the other sides. For me,
a balanced and focused personal life creates the foundation for a fantastic surgical life—one where my patients receive the very best care and attention they deserve.
